RECEIVE
You’ll receive documentation of your charitable gift. The Foundation will provide you with an acknowledgment for your records.

Your harvest helps your community thrive. The proceeds from your grain gift support grants, scholarships, and community needs in your county.

NOTIFY
Notify the Foundation that the grain gift is coming. Ensure that the grain shows the Community Foundation as the owner.

SELL
The Community Foundation authorizes the sale. After ownership is transferred, the Foundation authorizes the sale of the grain and receives the proceeds.

Deliver a portion of your grain to the elevator.
*Designate the Community Foundation as the owner before the grain is sold on the scale ticket.

    • You can exclude the sale of the cash crop from income and deduct the cost of growing the crop. There is no deduction for a charitable contribution.

    • You must give up "dominion and control" of the commodity.

    • The grain cannot be sold with an order for the proceeds to be sent to the Foundation. This would result in the transaction being considered a cash sale and cash donation since control of the property was not given up.

    • The transaction must be well documented to show the Foundation as the owner (i.e. commodity is delivered and a warehouse receipt given.

    • The Foundation will retain the receipt and the original invoice showing it as the seller.

    • Contact the Foundation about the intended gift of grain so we can set up an account at the elevator.

    • Deliver the grain to the elevator.

    • Transfer the grain as a gift to the Foundation by having the elevator send the receipt to us. The receipt must show the Foundation as the owner of the grain.

    • We will provide you with a donation receipt for the gift. This amount of grain will not have to be declared as income.

    • We will authorize the sale of grain and collect the proceeds.

    • You will receive an acknowledgement of the transaction from us for your gift of grain.

      (for students studying an agriculture-related field, education, or nursing)

    • Richard L. & Marion J. Eller Scholarship Endowment Fund
      (for students from Clay, Ervin and/or Howard Townships who will be attending an Indiana college, preference given to students pursuing a degree in agricultural-related studies.)

    • Howard County 4-H Fund
      (Paul J. Raver memorial)

    • Clarence Cochran Agricultural Scholarship Fund
      (for Clinton Central High School graduates studying vocational education or agriculture)

    • Strange Family Scholarship Fund
      (for Clinton Central High School graduates studying agriculture or technical program at Purdue University)

    • Robert Brinson Scholarship Fund
      (for Clinton Central High School FFA members who have participated in vocational agriculture courses and will be attending Purdue University)

      (for Carroll County students pursuing a degree in an agricultural field)

  • Yes! You do not have to just give grain. Another option you can consider is livestock.

    The ownership transfers to the charity before the livestock is sold and the farmer will not have taxable income from the sale.  

    There are specific procedures that must be followed to make sure you get the desired tax results.  Be sure to contact the Foundation before making a gift of grain or livestock. Farmers should consult with their tax consultant to see if this is a giving strategy that is right for them. The following information is not to be construed as specific tax advice.   • Yes! Your charitable gift of grain can support an existing fund or help establish a new permanent fund. For agriculture-related funds in your county, see the list above.

  • Contact us before the grain is sold. We will work with you and your elevator to help ensure the transfer is completed correctly.

  • Yes. The Community Foundation will provide a donation receipt for your gift. While a charitable gift of grain is generally not deductible as a charitable contribution, you do not report the value of the donated grain as income to your farming operation. Consult your tax advisor about your specific situation.

  • Many local grain elevators are familiar with charitable gifts of grain. If assistance is needed, the Community Foundation will provide guidance to help ensure everything is completed properly.

  • Contact the Community Foundation. Our team is happy to answer your questions, guide you through the process, and work with you, your grain elevator, and your tax advisor to help make your charitable gift of grain as simple as possible.
